Between the decadent movement and the Criollismo (Regionalism movement): the case of «Los ojos de Judas» (The eyes of Judas) by Abraham Valdelomar

Abstract

In this article we study the complex relationships between certain Decadent components, typical characteristics of the modernist inheritance, and those of criollista poetry, both present in «Los ojos de Judas» by Abraham Valdelomar. We postulate that, in the case of this story, it is possible to identify a heterogeneous narrative to aim to be national from the local reinvindication; but, in turn, does not abandon the characteristics of Decadent modernism such as exploration of the evil, disease, and the questioning of Christian values. An analysis of this story from the comparison of the decadent and criollismo poetry is performed, in addition, to an approach of the text that relies on the analysis of the narrative programme and the intertextual relationships that are set in the story.

Jorge Valenzuela Garcés, Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos

Doctor en Literatura Hispanoamericana por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Es uno de los más destacados integrantes de la generación de narradores peruanos de los ochenta. Ha publicado cinco libros de cuentos Horas contadas (1988), La soledad de los magos (1994), La sombra interior (2006), Juegos secretos (2011) e Infiernos mínimos (2014). Sus relatos figuran en las más exigentes antologías nacionales de cuento y han sido recogidos en selecciones en el extranjero. Como crítico literario ha publicado Principios comprometidos. Mario Vargas Llosa entre la literatura y la política (2013) y un manual de Literatura hispanoamericana (2009, 2011) en dos volúmenes. Actualmente, se desempeña como jefe del Departamento de Literatura de la Facultad de Letras de la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos en donde dirige el taller de narración y edita la revista Letras.
